PRESS RELEASE: The exhibition Cindy Sherman – All New Women pairs the esteemed portraiture of John Singer Sargent, considered one of the most successful, talented and celebrated portrait painters of the Edwardian Era, with provocative selfportrait photographs by contemporary artist Cindy Sherman, an internationally significant artist who’s attained an astronomical level of celebrity for her bodies of work. The exhibition matches Sargent’s meticulous paintings with Sherman’s provocative photographs, and together they make curious visual statements about trailblazing women who forged new paths for the next generations. Also included in the exhibition are works by Sara Ware Howsam, a Colorado Springs based artist exhibiting new work inspired by the theme of influential women, looking to her own peers and to the history of the FAC and Colorado Springs to find subjects for the paintings, and Lyle Ashton Harris’ unique Billie polaroids, challenging perceptions of gender and identity.
